Description
The barn range located to the north-east of Higher Staplehill is an early 19th-century bank barn and an attached barn. It is constructed from limestone rubble and brick, topped with slate roofs.
The layout consists of two rectangular barns, with the bank barn featuring a half-hipped roof and the other barn having a hipped roof that slopes to the north. The bank barn has two storeys on the east side, which faces the farmyard. Just below the eaves on this side is a pigeon loft, characterized by a long horizontal opening with a timber lintel and sill, filled at intervals with three courses of bricks that provide access for the birds. A rubblestone staircase with a wrought-iron rail leads up to a first-floor doorway located to the right of center. The ground floor includes three semicircular openings with finely-cut Devon limestone voussoirs; one is positioned to the right of the stairs and two to the left, resembling those found at Ringslade Farm on Ringslade Road.
At the rear of the bank barn, there is a large opening with a timber lintel designed for loading carts, flanked by two smaller openings at a lower level, likely used for storing roots. The smaller barn features a wide opening on the ground floor at the front and a first-floor loading bay at the rear.
Inside, the bank barn boasts a five-bay collar-truss roof with nailed joints, oak floorboards, and wide planked doors fitted with wrought-iron strap hinges.
