Description
New Bridge is a road bridge that crosses the River Teign, built in the early to mid-19th century, possibly around 1845. It is constructed from local pink and grey limestone rubble, featuring granite piers, intrados, and copings on the parapets. The bridge has a narrow two-span design with an additional lower flood span. It includes two round-headed arches, with the flood span also being round-headed. The principal arches are adorned with rusticated voussoirs at the arch rings and have acutely-pointed low granite cutwaters on the upstream (east) side, which are capped with boldly-moulded limestone. Some putlog holes can be seen on the east face of the bridge. The parapets curve outward at the ends, contributing to the bridge's aesthetic appeal. This is a fine example of a bridge with impressive masonry detail.
