Description

No. 11 Wolborough Street is an inn that has been converted into a shop and art gallery. It dates from the 17th century or earlier and was altered in the mid-19th century. The building features painted stucco, likely over a timber frame, and has a slate roof with a large external lateral stack on the gabled rear wing. It has a two-unit through-passage plan, with a central rear wing and a long two-storey rear right wing added in the 20th century.

The exterior is two storeys high and has a two-window range. The first floor features late 19th-century paired plate-glass sash windows with horns, while the ground floor includes a four-pane plate-glass shop front to the left and a single-pane plate-glass window to the right. There is a central semi-elliptical arch, possibly indicating a narrow carriageway, above a very wide 19th-century door with two rows of three panels.

Inside, to the rear right of the former through passage, there is a painted stone corbel that supports a chamfered axial beam. The first floor contains a 17th-century planked screen with ribbed moulding and chamfered arrises on the projecting planks on both sides. Historically, this building was known as The Bear Inn.
