Description
No. 12 Dyer Street, known as The Bear Inn, is a public house that dates from the 16th or 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th century and late 20th century. The front of the building is timber-framed and stuccoed, while the left gable wall is made of reconstituted stone. The right gable and rear walls are constructed from coursed limestone rubble. The rear wing features a small area of timber-framing, with reconstituted stone and render on the left side, and coursed squared limestone rubble on the rear left side and rear. The roofs are covered with concrete tiles for both the front range and the rear wing, and there are three brick stacks located on the ridge and the right slope of the rear wing.
The building is three stories high and has a three-window range. The first floor has three late 18th-century 3/6-pane sash windows with moulded timber surrounds, and the second floor has three similar windows. On the ground floor, there are two 6/6-pane windows with a timber cill band. To the left, there is a former carriage entrance with an exposed timber lintel, which now features an open arcade supported by four pillars and a 20th-century gable wall. A door located on the left side of the building under the arcade is a 20th-century design with a glazed panel. The left side of the rear wing has five 20th-century two-light metal casements on the first floor, and the ground floor has ten similar windows along with four 20th-century doors.
