Description

The Fleece Hotel occupies a prominent position on the north side of the Market Place in Cirencester and comprises three buildings of different dates and styles, with alterations throughout the 20th century.

The building to the left dates from the late 19th century and is constructed of coursed squared limestone, with stucco over timber framing to the centre and stucco to the right. It has a clay tile roof with coped verges to the left, and brick stacks at the left and right ends. It is two storeys and an attic in height, with a 3-window front. The first floor has three 2-light stone mullion and transom windows with iron casements in chamfered stone surrounds, and three gabled half-dormers with similar windows to the attic. The ground floor features a shopfront with C20 glazing and a recessed half-glazed door in a timber surround with pilasters, frieze and moulded cornice.

The central building, dating from the mid-17th century, presents two gables to the front. It is of three storeys and an attic, with a 3-window range. The first floor has a C20 two-light casement to the centre, and similar 4-light glazing to the front of the bay windows to the left and right, with single-light returns. The second floor follows a similar pattern. The ground floor has a matching arrangement of C20 windows, with bays separated by timber mullions. Two similar 2-light windows are set within the gables. The building has a shallow plinth and moulded timber cornices that project forward over the bays on each of the ground, first, and second floors. The bays have Welsh slate roofs.

The building to the right is of the mid-18th century and is constructed of ashlar. It is three storeys and an attic in height, with a 4-window front. The first floor has four 6/6-pane sashes in plain reveals with projecting cills, and the second floor has four similar 3/6-pane sashes. The ground floor has three similar 6/6-pane sashes to the right, and a carriage entrance with plank doors and C20 glazed doors to the interior to the left. Three hipped dormers are set into the attic roof, each featuring a 2-light casement. The building has a deep plinth and band courses over the ground and first floors, with a coved plaster eaves cornice. The interior was not inspected.
