Description
54 and 56 High Street is an inn and shop that has been converted into a house and shop. It dates from the 17th century, with alterations made in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The building is constructed of painted coursed stone rubble and features a plain-tiled roof, with older tiles over No. 54. It has integral brick stacks at the ridge and gable ends, and a rectangular plan that runs parallel to the street, with rear extension wings.
The exterior is two storeys high. The street front has four small-paned metal casement windows from the 19th century on the first floor. On the ground floor to the left, there are two late 19th-century three-light wooden mullioned and transomed windows, along with early 19th-century double doors that have six fielded panels. These elements are all set beneath a moulded wood fascia supported by consoles. To the right, there is a late 19th-century plate-glass shop front and a glazed panelled door leading to No. 54.
The interior has not been inspected. No. 56 was known as the Britannia Inn until around 1895.
