Description

Ogwell Grange is a house that was formerly a rectory, built in 1849. It is constructed of stone with slate roofs and brick chimneys, featuring a romantically asymmetrical 'Tudor' design. The building has two storeys and a U-shaped plan, with the main house occupying one side and half the base of the U, while the service wing occupies the rest.

The north-west garden front is dominated on the left by a gabled projection that includes a two-storey canted bay window. There is one window in each storey to the left of the projection and two to the right. The second-storey windows have gables above them, each featuring a slit window in the centre. Both the gabled projection and the second-storey windows have kneelers and copings. The windows are sash style, with those on the second storey having a single glazing-bar.

The north-east entrance front has a slightly lower roofline for the service wing on the left, but otherwise maintains a cohesive design. To the right, there is a gabled projection with a bay window similar to that on the garden front. To the left of this projection is an entrance porch set at an angle, featuring a pent roof and a four-centred arched doorway with double doors that are studded and have ornate strap-hinges. The left-hand end of the front has two projecting chimney-stacks, with the one on the right displaying a quirky angle-buttress. Between this chimney and the porch is a ground-storey window with two Tudor-arched lights.

The south-east front features two ground-storey windows and one second-storey window with latticed iron glazing. The building has dramatic roof-lines with crested ridge-tiles and clustered chimney-shafts, which are diagonally set and have decorative tops. The interior is well-preserved. The house was formerly known as East Ogwell Rectory.
