Description
The barn located about 5 metres east of Pitt Farmhouse is likely a late medieval structure that was later repurposed as a barn. It is built of cob on stone rubble footings, with one wall partially rebuilt in brick, and features a corrugated iron roof that was probably originally thatched. The barn has a rectangular plan and two different roof structures: a 2-bay jointed cruck roof at the north end and a later 18th-century roof at the south end with four trusses. The two northernmost bays show signs of sooting, which may indicate either an accidental fire or that it was originally part of a medieval open hall house. The exterior has plain elevations with opposing threshing doors and a later doorway on the left gable end. Inside, the jointed cruck truss is side-pegged with threaded purlins and a mortised collar, with the cruck feet descending to the stone plinth. The four later trusses are collar rafter and pegged. The barn has group value with Pitt Farmhouse.
