Description
Newhouse Farmhouse is a farmhouse built in the 1830s for the Mamhead Estate. It is very similar to Broomhouse Farmhouse in Ashcombe, which was also part of the estate at one time. The building is whitewashed and rendered, featuring end stacks on corbels and a slate roof with gabled ends that have curly bargeboards. Its Gothic style is unusual for a farmhouse of this date.
The farmhouse has a single depth main block that is two rooms wide, with a central entrance porch and principal rooms on the left and right, along with a rear left service wing. The exterior is two storeys high with a symmetrical three-bay front. It includes a very steeply-pointed gabled two-storey porch adorned with curly bargeboards, which is slightly corbelled out at the first-floor level and has a three-light stepped window in the gable. The original timber mullioned windows are notable features.
On the right side, the service wing consists of three bays and has a 20th-century concrete block porch. There are three first-floor timber mullioned two-light windows, a similar four-light window on the ground floor to the left, and a three-light window to the right of the porch. One window retains what is presumably the original glazing with diamond leaded panes. The farmhouse remains very unspoiled externally and is an unusual example of an early 19th-century Gothic farmhouse. It is shown on the tithe map of 1839.
