Description

The Barracks is a former infantry barracks located on Barrack Road in Modbury, built in 1794. The structure features rubble stone walls that vary in height from 2 meters to 3 meters, enclosing a long rectangular area that narrows to a rounded point at the north end. The wall is mostly continuous, with a pair of single-storey lodges at the south end facing Barrack Road. These lodges have hipped slate roofs, two blank segmental-headed recesses at the cills, and square piers flanking a pair of wooden gates. The south wall is generally lower than the rest and includes a large opening approximately 8 meters wide at its center. In the southwest corner, there is an L-plan single-storey house with hipped slate roofs, which has been modified in the 20th century but remains significant for holding the corner of the enclosure. On the west side, there are four large external square buttresses, with an additional two near the south end of the wall. These Napoleonic barracks, or possibly an enclosed camping ground, are now surrounded by new housing, but the enclosing wall remains largely intact and serves as an important historical reminder for the town.
