Description
Rattery Viaduct is a railway viaduct built around 1848 by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and was widened around 1892-1893 when the broad gauge was replaced. The original single track viaduct consists of six bays made of coursed stone rubble, featuring round arches with granite arch rings, supported by rectangular piers that have round arch openings. A late 19th-century stone rubble parapet is present. The north side was widened in 1892-1893 using rock-faced granite with engineering brick arch rings. The South Devon Railway, which was authorized in 1844, opened this section from Totnes to Plymouth in 1848. The Great Western Railway took over in 1876, and the South Devon Company was dissolved in 1878. The original broad gauge was replaced in 1892-1893.
