Description

The farmhouse dates from around the 17th century, with alterations in the 18th century and an extension built in the 19th century. A stable from the 19th century is now incorporated into the house, and there are 20th-century extensions to the rear. The farmhouse is constructed of plastered stone rubble, with a slurried slate roof and gabled ends, with asbestos slates at the north east end. A large plastered chimney stack has set-offs at the north east end and an axial stack near the ridge at the south west end. Originally, the building appears to have had a two- or three-room and through-passage plan, with stacks at each end. An 18th-century staircase was inserted into the rear of the passage, and an 18th-century parlour wing was added at a right angle to the higher end. A 19th-century stable extension stands at the lower end, now part of the house, with 20th-century lean-to extensions to the rear. The front elevation has a long, five-window range, with a 20th-century casement window on the ground floor to the right, set in an enlarged opening. A wide through-passage doorway is located to the right of centre, with a plank door set in a heavy timber doorframe with a lead mould and a gabled stone porch. A doorway at the lower end (left) has a slate hood. A hipped roof wing from the 18th century extends to the north (rear), creating an L-shaped plan, with further 20th-century lean-to extensions to the rear. Inside, the 18th-century staircase at the back of the passage has a turned balustrade at the top. The roof retains a complete set of trusses with lap-jointed apices to the principals and lap-jointed collars, all side-pegged.
