Description
Combe Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates from the 16th century, with extensions from the early 17th century, 18th century, and early 19th century. It is constructed of slate rubble, partly rendered, and features granite dressings. The roof is slate with gabled ends, while the early 19th century extension has a hipped roof. The building has two storeys. The original 16th-century house, located to the northwest, has been shortened at the lower (north) end from the cross passage. The cross passage to the left includes a hollow chamfered four-centred arch doorway with carved spandrels and an ovolo outer order. The gabled porch has a similar doorway with remnants of a label. There is a slate rubble ridge chimney stack at the higher end of the hall, along with another chimney stack that was formerly external but is now within the rear wing.
To the southwest, there is an early 17th-century wing that forms an L-shaped plan and retains some granite window frames, many of which are reused and mostly blocked. An external chimney stack is located on the south wall. At the rear, there is a circa 18th-century wing with a hipped roof and an external chimney stack on the south side. The early 19th-century extension on the east end of the 18th-century wing is taller, featuring a low pitched hipped roof and a large external chimney stack on the south wall. The windows throughout the building are mostly 19th-century casements, with some sashes.
Inside, the early 17th-century southwest wing has intersecting ceiling beams adorned with carved running leaf and ribbon decoration, along with heavily moulded joists. The stone newel staircase likely originally projected from the original range, and the fireplaces are blocked.
