Description

The Great Barn at Coombe Farm is a barn with an attached shippen wing and a horse engine house, dating from circa the 16th or 17th century for the barn itself. The barn is constructed of slate rubble, with a low-pitched roof of corrugated asbestos. It has ten bays, with buttressed walls at the front and back, featuring set-offs to the buttresses. There are ventilation slits high in the walls, with pigeon holes positioned below, and further ventilation slits in the north gable end. A loft door is located in the south end. Segmental arched cart entrances are positioned centrally. The original collar-braced roof of ten bays has been replaced with steel trusses clad in asbestos sheeting.

An early 19th century shippen adjoins the barn to the south east at a right angle, forming an L-shaped plan. It is also built of slate rubble with a slurried slate roof and a gable end. The shippen has doorways with wooden lintels and a loft door above.

A late 18th century horse engine house is situated on the south west side of the barn. It is constructed of slate rubble with a polygonal plan and a hipped slurried slate roof.
