Description

UGBOROUGH LOWER FILHAM SX 65 NW

8/119 Remains of Chapel 11-11-52 south of Filham House

  • II

Remains of chapel reused as folly. Medieval chapel of St Andrew licenced in 1400 and treated as a folly in C18 by the addition of a tower in 1742. Only part of the walls of one end of the chapel still stands and even this may have been largely rebuilt when the tall narrow polygonal tower was added in C18 at the east end. The tower has loops and contains a stone newel staircase with a painted arch doorway at the bottom on the west side. Situated in the grounds of Filham House which was built in C18 and remodelled in C19, and on the site of an earlier mansion.
