Description

Middle Filham is a house that was formerly a farmhouse, dating from the late 16th century. It is constructed of stone rubble and features a slate roof with gabled ends. The building has a three-room and cross-passage plan, with a kitchen or parlour wing at the rear that forms a T-shaped layout. There is an axial stone stack that backs onto the former cross passage, along with gable end stacks and a lateral stack at the rear of the lower end. The rear wing has a large gable end stack.

The house is two storeys high and has a long five-window range. The windows are 19th and 20th century casements with glazing bars, and the ground floor windows have 19th century flat red brick arches. There is an early 19th century panelled door leading to the former cross passage, located to the right of centre, which has a slate hood. To the left at the higher end, there is a later plank door, also with a slate hood.

Inside, the hall features one chamfered main axial beam and two half beams at the upper and lower ends, with bar steps that have sunken spandrels recessed on either side. The chamfered joists also have similar steps. The hall fireplace is constructed with granite jambs and a chamfered timber lintel that has straight cut steps. Early to mid-19th century stairs have been inserted into the wide cross passage. The roof over the hall and higher end consists of four trusses with straight principals, halved and lap-jointed apices, and three tiers of mortices for threaded purlins, although the purlins are missing. The later collars are bolted or nailed. The four trusses over the lower end are crossed and lap-jointed at the apices, with lap-jointed and side pegged collars, and the purlins are trenched.
