Description
Cliff House is a house built in the early to mid 19th century, with later extensions from the 19th century. It features painted stone rubble, with some areas rendered, and has a slate hipped roof with wooden modillion eaves. The building has a central axial stack with a large square rendered shaft topped with a cage, likely to protect the chimney pots from seagulls.
The layout consists of a main rectangular two-room plan with the staircase located behind the stack and the entrance in front of it. There is a small two-storey, one-room plan wing at the right end, which is likely a service wing. A cellar doorway is located at the left (east) side facing the sea. A first-floor extension jetties out over the main range at the angle with the wing, probably added in the late 19th century. Beneath this jetty, a conservatory was constructed in the 20th century.
The house is two storeys tall with a cellar. The north front has an asymmetrical arrangement of windows, featuring a projecting hipped roof on the right with 19th-century sash windows that have Gothick arched glazing. The central entrance is a 20th-century door with a 19th-century flush panel door behind it, and the conservatory is to the left. The symmetrical south elevation has three windows, including large 19th-century 12-pane sashes with arched glazing bars, and a very tall 24-pane stair window in the center, also with similar glazing bars. The east side, facing the sea, has one window on each floor, which are concealed by shutters, along with the cellar doorway below. The interior was not accessible during the survey conducted in 1988-89.
