Description

STOKENHAM BEESANDS SX84SW Cliff House 8/186 II

House. Circa early to mid C19 with later C19 extensions. Painted stone rubble, partly rendered. Slate hipped roof with wooden modillion eaves. Central axial stack with large square rendered shaft and cage on top (presumably to protect the pots from seagulls). Plan: The main rectangular 2-room plan range has a central axial stack with the staircase behind the stack and entrance in front of the stack. The small 2-storey 1-room plan wing on the front of the right hand end is probably an integral service wing. There is a cellar doorway at the left (east) seaward facing end. The first floor extension jettied out on the front of the main range in the angle with the wing is probably a later C19 addition. Under the jetty a C20 conservatory has been built. Exterior: 2 storeys and cellar. Asymmetrical 2:1 window north front. Projecting hipped roof coming on right with C19 sashes with Gothick arched glazing. Central C20 door with C19 flush panel door behind and C20 conservatory to left. Symmetrical 3-window rear south elevation with large C19 12-pane sashes, the top panes with arched glazing bars and very tall 24-pane stair window at centre with similar glazing bars. The east and facing the sea has one window on each floor concealed by shutters and cellar doorway below. Interior: Not accessible at time of survey 1988-9
