Description
Alma is a house dating from the early 19th century, with some minor modern updates. It features plastered walls, primarily made of stone rubble, and includes a timber-framed stair turret. The building has end and axial stacks with plastered brick chimney shafts and old chimney pots, topped with a slate roof. The plan is single-depth on a wedge-shaped site, comprising three rooms across.
The exterior rises three storeys with an attic and presents a nearly symmetrical garden front with four windows. The plastered front is lightly treated to resemble ashlar stone, with stucco quoins. Access is through the right boundary wall to a full-width verandah, which has four bays and half bays at each end, supported by iron columns with scrolled brackets and some iron railings at the front of the right end. The front doorways feature original six-panel doors; the main door, located left of centre, is round-headed with a radial pattern of glazing bars, a zig-zag margin, and incorporates orange glass. The ground floor has 12-pane sash windows and secondary French windows in the right end room. On the first floor, there are tall central 12-pane sashes with original ornamental cast-iron balconies, flanked by secondary canted bays with front horned four-pane sashes. The second floor retains original three-over-six pane sashes. The deep eaves are supported by shaped timber brackets under a hipped roof at each end. The right end also has more horned four-pane sashes. The rear stair block features a round-headed window with glazing bars beneath a 16-pane sash at the top landing.
Inside, the property is well-preserved, showcasing a wealth of original details, including a geometric stick-baluster staircase, chimneypieces, panelled doors, and moulded plaster cornices. The eastern boundary wall of the garden is a tall plastered stone wall that includes an elegant doorway leading onto the verandah, featuring a projecting flat stucco surround with a moulded entablature and pediment on console brackets, and a door with two vertical round-headed panels.
