Description

The range of farm buildings at Newhouse Farm consists of structures primarily built in the early to mid-19th century, with one barn dating back to the 18th century. The buildings are constructed from rubble and cob, featuring brick dressings and roofs that are hipped and gabled, covered in slate.

The layout includes two yards that are enclosed by the farm buildings on two and three sides. The lower yard has stables on two sides, with the other two sides bordered by a curving wall that runs along the roadside. A large carriageway in the left range leads to the front of Newhouse Farmhouse. The higher yard is surrounded on three sides by various buildings, including a barn and animal shelters, and features two levels, with the higher section supported by a tall rubble retaining wall. There is also a wall along the roadside, and a throughway in the west range that has a hay-loft above.

The exteriors include openings with cambered heads in the lower yard, featuring windows and doorways with brick voussoirs. On the ground floor, there are three casement windows with glazing bars and small panes, two of which have iron protective bars. The door openings have plank doors, and there are hay-loft openings set beneath the eaves. The higher yard contains the 18th-century cob barn, which has a central pair of large plank doors and a lean-to porch with rubble sides. To the left of the barn, there is a small wooden pigeon loft with 16 holes for birds, as well as two projecting buttresses on the front. The animal shelters are supported by narrow brick-dressed piers, and behind these shelters is another large barn and a five-bay carriage shed, which has three doorways with plank doors.
