Description
Penford Cottages are a pair of small cottages, originally four in a row, likely built in the 18th century and altered around 1920 into two dwellings. They are constructed from rubble and feature a gabled slate roof with wide eaves, two gable brick stacks, and two lateral stacks at the rear with tall brick shafts. The original layout probably consisted of four single-bay cottages, which were modified into two homes, each with a central hall and two flanking rooms. The entrance halls include straight-flight staircases, and the right room in the right cottage has full height on the ground floor, while the first floor has been removed.
The exterior is two storeys high with a symmetrical arrangement of windows, featuring three on each side. The windows are early 20th-century casements with leaded lights, incorporating much medieval and later glass, and there is a very tall easement to the right. Each dwelling has a central door opening with lean-to porches and half-glazed doors.
Inside, the most notable feature is the glass, which includes medieval pieces, 17th-century glass, and early 20th-century designs with quirky motifs such as cherubs and ships. The rest of the interiors have been completely refitted in the 20th century with simple joinery and features. The roof is likely from the 18th century, with straight principals visible in the first-floor bedrooms, while the remainder of the ridge and rafters are not visible.
