Description
Crosse Cottage is a house, likely dating to the late 17th or early 18th century, with 20th-century renovations. It was originally two or three cottages. The walls are colourwashed plastered cob on stone rubble footings, with a thatched roof, a plain ridge, and gables at each end. Rendered stacks are located at the ends of the roof. There are two single-storey lean-tos with red pantile roofs; one adjoins the left end, and the other wraps around the front left corner, both seemingly later additions.
The house is situated south of the church and backs onto the churchyard. Originally, a single depth range, it contains two heated rooms, one on either side of an entrance hall with a stair. The left-hand room is now a kitchen. Carpentry details suggest a late 17th or early 18th-century construction with considerable subsequent alterations. The front elevation is asymmetrical, with a five-window front with only four windows on the first floor. A recessed front door is centrally located to the right. It has 2- and 3-light, small-pane timber casements, likely from the 20th century. The rear elevation was probably originally blank and now has three small windows.
Inside, the left-hand room features a chamfered crossbeam with run-out stops and an open fireplace with a roughly-chamfered timber lintel and a bread oven. The right-hand room has a plain crossbeam, along with a 20th-century crossbeam. The roof was not inspected. The cottage is one of the few remaining thatched houses in the village and is important to the setting of the church.
