Description

Capitol Farmhouse, including the garden walls to the south, is a farmhouse likely built in the 18th century, with an earlier rear wing that was re-windowed in the 19th century. The building is made of colourwashed rendered stone rubble and features a slate roof with deep eaves, gabled ends, and end stacks, along with a projecting lateral stack on the rear wing that includes a bread oven from the late 19th century.

The farmhouse is situated adjacent to the churchyard and faces the village. It has a single-depth, south-facing main range that is two rooms wide, with heated rooms on either side of a central entrance passage that leads to the stairs. The rear kitchen wing is at a right angle to the main range and has a lower roofline, suggesting it may be older.

The exterior is two storeys high with a symmetrical four-bay front featuring a central gabled porch and a 20th-century two-leaf front door. The porch is flanked by 19th-century 16-pane sash windows, while the first floor has four 2-light timber casements from the 19th or 20th century, complete with glazing bars. The wing has a large projecting stack on the west elevation, which includes the bread oven.

To the south and west of the farmhouse, there is a stone rubble garden wall that likely dates from the 1870s, corresponding with the planned farmyard to the west. Inside, there is an open fireplace in the left-hand room. The roof has not been inspected but may hold historical interest. The farmhouse has group value with the nearby church, churchyard walls, and the planned farmyard.
