Description

Island House is a house that originated in the 17th century or earlier, with later additions and remodeling. It features colourwashed rendered cob and stone rubble, topped with a thatched roof that has a plain ridge, gabled ends, and a half-hipped section over the two-storey porch. There is a modern brick shaft at the right end stack and two internal rear lateral stacks with brick shafts. The building has a single depth range, three rooms wide, with a two-storey porch approximately in the center and a workshop at the right end. The right end room, currently used as a pottery, seems to be an addition or a rebuilding, and a change in plane on the front elevation indicates that the left end has also been rebuilt at some point.

The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical six-window front, featuring a half-glazed door from the late 19th or 20th century leading to the storeyed porch, and a separate entrance to the right that leads into the pottery. The timber windows date from the late 19th and 20th centuries and include glazing bars, with some being fixed and others casements. Inside, there is some exposed carpentry. The roof was not inspected at the time of the survey in 1987. Island House occupies a significant position in the village.
