Description

Rock Cottage is a small cottage, probably dating from the 17th century, with a rear wing that may be a later addition. It is constructed of colourwashed rendered cob and stone rubble, topped with a corrugated asbestos roof that is gabled at both ends; the roof was thatched until at least 1960 according to an old listing description. The right end stack was once shared with the adjoining Hills View.

The cottage has an L-shaped plan and may have originally been a single-cell cottage with a one-room plan rear right wing, which could be a later addition. The front room, which faces the road, has an entrance to the left, away from the stack, and a stair in the rear left corner that is partitioned off from the room. There is also a small single-storey lean-to, possibly a fuel store, attached to the left end.

The exterior of the cottage faces the main road through the village but is set back from it, similar to Hills View, and features a small garden in front. It is two storeys high with an asymmetrical one-window front. The entrance, located to the left, has a 19th or early 20th-century plank front door with a porch hood. To the right is a six-pane fixed window, and on the first floor, there is a 20th-century two-light timber casement window.

The interior of the front room was inspected, revealing a deeply chamfered axial beam that suggests a 17th-century date. The fireplace is from the 20th century but likely conceals earlier jambs and a lintel. Rock Cottage is part of a cluster of early houses located at the south end of the village.
