Description

East Rock Cottage is a house with origins dating back to the early 17th century or earlier, which was extended by a shop at the west end, likely in the 18th century. The front (south) elevation is whitewashed and rendered, while the rear (north) elevation shows exposed cob on stone rubble footings. The roof is thatched at the west end and half-hipped, with a corrugated asbestos roof on the east side. There is a truncated projecting front lateral stack that includes a bread oven.

The layout suggests it was originally a single-depth, three-room plan house from the 17th century, though it has undergone significant alterations. At the west end, there is a single-storey thatched block, which is probably an 18th-century shop or workshop that was once detached from the main structure. The entrance is now located in the west end wall, at the junction of the main range and the thatched block.

The exterior features two storeys and an asymmetrical three-window south elevation, with a mix of two-light 20th-century timber casements. There is a 1980s porch on the left return wall, with a two-light 20th-century casement above it. The thatched block also has 20th-century casements. The interior was not inspected during the survey in 1987, but it is reported to be significantly altered, retaining only the feet of two cruck trusses in the main range, with no access to the apex of the roof. The cottage has group value with a cluster of early houses nearby.
