Description

Thornton is a 17th-century house located in Bishop's Nympton. It features a whitewashed and rendered exterior, likely made of stone and cob, with a slate roof that has gabled ends and an axial stack with a handmade brick shaft. The house faces the village street and has a single depth main range that is two rooms wide, with a passage entrance to the left of center.

The larger room on the right, heated by a stack that backs onto the passage, is likely the original hall from the 17th century, while the smaller room on the left serves as an unheated service room. A staircase rises from the rear of the hall, and there may have originally been an inner room that has since been lost due to subdivision. The house has a flying freehold with the adjoining property to the south.

The exterior is two storeys tall and has an asymmetrical front with three windows. There is a 20th-century recessed front door to the left of center. The windows are mostly 19th or early 20th-century timber casements with glazing bars, except for a single-light window on the ground floor to the left.

Inside, the principal ground floor room retains 17th-century carpentry features, including a fireplace with a chamfered lintel that has one elaborate scroll stop, although the right-hand stop is worn away. There is also a chamfered crossbeam and exposed joists. The roof was not inspected during the survey, but the principal rafters visible upstairs are reported to be straight, according to information from the owner.
