Description
The gate-piers and walls at the entrance to the drive to the Rectory were likely built in 1836 by J. Cock of South Molton for the Reverend Joseph Thorne. Constructed from stone rubble, the structure features short sections of outward-curving walls that extend from the gate-piers, which are square in section and topped with plain cornices and shallow pyramidal caps. These piers end with identical piers that create a turning place. The gate-piers and walls have group value with the Rectory and associated buildings. A similar design can be found at Grilstone in the same parish, which belonged to Joseph Thorne's father and was rebuilt in 1834, likely also by J. Cock.
