Description

Barton View and Vicarage View are two adjoining houses with a passageway between them, located in Bishop's Nympton. They date from the late 17th century to early 18th century and are likely one build, with Barton View having undergone 20th-century interior renovations. The exterior features colourwashed plastered cob and stone rubble, topped with a thatched roof that is hipped at the right end of the main range and gabled at the left end. There is a left end stack and an axial stack to the rear right wing.

The layout is L-shaped, with Barton View being single depth and currently consisting of two rooms wide, with an entrance to the right. The passageway from the street separates it from Vicarage View, which has one room at the front and an entrance from the passageway leading into the rear right wing, also one room in plan.

The houses are two storeys high, with an asymmetrical four-to-one window front and the passageway located to the right of centre. Barton View features a 20th-century half-glazed front door immediately to the left of the passage, and a set of probably 19th-century small-pane two-light casements, except for the ground floor right window of Vicarage View, which is a 20th-century timber replacement. The rear elevation of Barton View includes a 20th-century door to the right of centre, two 20th-century windows to the south, and a one-light 20th-century first-floor window to the north, along with a small 20th-century lean-to adjacent to the wing of Vicarage View. Vicarage View has a blocked doorway that has been converted to a window on the south elevation of the wing, with a two-light window above.

Inside, Barton View has been modernized and likely repartitioned. Vicarage View features one exposed ceiling beam, probably from the late 17th or 18th century, in the rear wing, while the front room was not inspected at the time of the survey. The roof was not inspected but may hold interest. The buildings have group value with Peartree Cottage located on the opposite side of the road.
