Description

The stable block, along with the wall to the stable yard and the walls to the kitchen garden, is located north-east of the Rectory in Bishop's Nympton. It was likely built around 1836, the same time as the house, although the stable yard wall, which is partly made of cob, may be older. The stable has undergone minor alterations in the late 19th century.

The stable block is constructed from roughcast stone rubble and features a slate roof with gabled ends and some brick detailing. There is a brick chimney stack on the rear left. The kitchen garden walls are made of stone rubble, topped with slate capping and red ridge tiles, while the stable yard wall is similar but includes roughcast cob on stone rubble footings.

The layout includes a large rectangular kitchen garden located behind the Rectory, extending along Parsonage Hill, with the stable yard wall continuing to the west. The stable is situated in the north-east corner of the stable yard, adjacent to the west wall of the kitchen garden, and has a gable facing Parsonage Hill with a window overlooking the lane.

On the exterior, the stable features a loft accessed by a likely 19th-century plank door with an overlight, positioned to the right of center and flanked by 16-pane sash windows, some of which are missing glazing bars. Above the plank door is a 19th-century loft door, with blind recesses on either side. To the left, there is a pair of 20th-century plank carriage doors beneath a 19th-century loft door. The left side facing Parsonage Hill has a 4-pane 20th-century sash window with a brick lintel and jambs. The stable yard and kitchen garden walls are buttressed on both sides, and the stable yard is paved with pitched stones. The interior of the stable has not been inspected. This stable block is part of a well-preserved early 19th-century group that includes the Rectory.
