Description

A group of 19th-century farmbuildings located west of Capitol Farmhouse. These buildings were likely originally associated with Court Green as well as Capitol Farm and were constructed in 1877 for the Bishop's Nympton estate, owned by William Keates, as evidenced by a datestone. The buildings are constructed from stone rubble with red brick dressings, featuring gable-ended slate roofs.

The farmyard follows an H-shaped plan, forming two small yards; the south yard faces onto the village green, while the north yard is situated behind, accessed from a farm lane. Two parallel ranges run along a north/south axis, with a threshing barn range to the west and a shippon range to the east, which forms the garden boundary of Capitol Farmhouse. Between these ranges, and dividing the yards, is an open-fronted cartshed, facing south, with a doorway providing access between the two yards.

The west-facing threshing barn range has two pairs of double threshing doors, cheeks, two loft doors, and a window on its west elevation. The east elevation, facing into the south yard, has a pair of double threshing doors with a slate pent roof, along with a 20th-century concrete block addition. The north-facing side has a horse engine house with a canted north end, followed by a pair of double doors, external stone steps leading to a loft door, and a smaller ground-floor doorway to the right. The cartshed adjoins the threshing barn at the north end.

The shippon range has three doorways facing into the south yard, as well as two loft doors and a window. Its north-facing side features a pair of double doors and two loft doors. The open-fronted cartshed has two bays facing the south yard, with a doorway leading into the north yard. These are a late 19th-century planned farm buildings with few alterations, exhibiting group value with the farmhouse and positioned prominently facing the village green.
