Description
The Clarence Hotel is a public house located on High Street in Barnstaple. It dates from the mid-19th century and is likely a remodelling of an earlier building. The front is solid and rendered, topped with a slated roof and featuring a rendered chimney positioned behind the ridge on the right side. The building stands two storeys high and has a three-window range.
On the ground floor, there is a wide cart entrance to the left, which has a bracketed cornice above it. This entrance features panelled double doors, with each leaf having three short panels below and three tall panels above. To the right, there is a bar door that also has a bracketed cornice, which is nearly as long as the one above the cart entrance; this door appears to have been narrowed. In the centre, there is a three-light wood window with mullions and a transom, which is probably from the 20th century. The upper-storey windows are plain sashes set within moulded architraves. The building has a deep boxed eaves cornice supported by paired brackets, which rise from a stepped architrave. The interior has not been inspected.
