Description
Nos. 13 and 14 West Saunton, along with the attached barn, are probably 17th century, with the barn added in the 18th century. The main range is built of whitewashed rubble stone with cob in the upper storey, and has a hipped thatched roof at the right end, gabled to the left. The barn is of cob construction with a hipped thatched roof. The original layout may have been a 3-cell through-passage plan, featuring a large rubble hall stack with a tapered cap and another large rubble stack to the rear, which has weathered stone detailing. Internal partitions have been altered due to the division of the building into two dwellings, each now consisting of a single cell with access on the right side of each cell. The barn extends at right angles to the rear left, forming an L-shaped layout; one bay of the barn has been incorporated into the left-hand dwelling. The two-storey main range has four bays, with the third bay from the left breaking forward to accommodate the hall stack. There are four 2-light casements with six panes over a small slated roofed porch on each side, and similar casements to the left. The right-hand porch roof extends slightly over a projecting bread oven with a thin slated cap. A slated outshut is located at the right end. The hall ceiling has chamfered beams with scroll stops, and the fireplace lintel is also chamfered. Early brickwork is visible in the bread oven. The original 17th century roof trusses remain largely intact, although roof access is unavailable.
