Description
Glebe Farmhouse is a house and former barn, possibly originally dating from the 17th century, with a barn section also from the 17th century. The building was altered and partly rebuilt in the early 19th century, with further alterations in the mid to late 20th century. The original house, forming a tall wing, is rendered and has a brick dentil cornice. The barn section is timber framed with brick infill, underbuilt in brick and regular coursed lias; it was refronted in brick with a brick dentil cornice. Both sections have tile roofs, brick ridge stacks, and external stacks. The house is in an L-plan configuration and has two storeys and an attic, with a four-window range. A far-projecting wing is located on the right. A central panelled door is topped with a hood on shaped brackets. Later 20th-century leaded-light casements are present. A ground floor section has been built out on the left with a flat roof, and an outshut addition to the remaining section of barn includes double doors. The left return side of the wing has a two-window range and a single dormer. The right return side has a three-window range and a large external stack. The rear of the house now serves as the main entrance front. The barn range has exposed timber framing, brick underbuilding, and includes a section of brickwork. A recessed porch with a wood lintel contains 20th-century double-leaf half-glazed doors, while one barn opening lacks doors. Inside, the barn range has exposed timber framing and chamfered ceiling beams, an inglenook fireplace with a chamfered bressumer, seats, cupboards with H-L hinges, flagstone floors, and three-plank doors. The roof is a through-purlin design. The barn section has a queen strut roof with heavy beamed ceilings. Other sections of the barn have internal brick partitions and a masonry staircase to a disused door.
