Description
Nettleford Old Farmhouse is a disused farmhouse dating from around the mid-17th century, with possible re-roofing in the 19th century. It is constructed of rendered cob and stone rubble, topped with a slate roof that has gabled ends. The building features a left end stack and a front right corner stack. The layout consists of a single depth plan that is two rooms wide, with a rear right projection that contains the stairs and an entrance into a lean-to on the left end. It is possible that the original design was a three-room house with a cross passage, but the lower end has been truncated, and the current lean-to occupies the former passage position. This leaves a 17th-century hall on the left and an inner room parlour on the right.
The exterior has an asymmetrical two-window front with late 19th to early 20th century small-pane timber casements and a 19th-century front door leading into the lean-to on the left. Inside, the left room features a 17th-century chamfered stopped doorframe from the lean-to, an open fireplace with a chamfered stopped lintel, a bread oven, and a crossbeam with scroll nick stops. The right room has a chamfered crossbeam and a 17th-century chamfered stopped doorframe leading to the rear right stair projection, which contains a staircase from the 19th century or later. The roof apex was not inspected, but the principal rafters appear to be straight and may date to the 19th century.
