Description

Bulkworthy Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse that has undergone significant modifications, with a 20th-century extension at the back that is not of special interest. The building is constructed of rendered cob and features a half-hipped roof covered with asbestos-cement slate. The layout is somewhat complex but likely originally consisted of two rooms, with a dairy at a slightly higher floor level to the left. The staircase is now located opposite the entrance, backing onto the fireplace in the right-hand room. The kitchen, situated on the left, has a front lateral stack.

The farmhouse is two storeys high and has two windows, all of which are 2-light wood casements. The window to the left of the stack on the ground floor has glazing bars. There is a deep-set four-panel part-glazed door to the right of a large projecting stack. The right end of the building features a one-storey lean-to, above which is a small casement window with brick dressings. The back of the farmhouse also has an early 2-light casement window.

Inside, the central room contains an Aga stove set in a large opening beneath an 18th-century wooden mantel shelf, which has a central key and dropped ends. There is one large early 17th-century deep chamfered spine beam, which partly spans the entry to the later inserted staircase. The room to the right has a late 20th-century fireplace and a boxed beam. The dairy, accessed by a step up from the kitchen to the left, features chamfered and stopped beams. The roof space has not been inspected, but the feet of heavy principal beams are visible in the low-ceilinged bedrooms.
