Description

Marwoods Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates from the 17th century or possibly earlier. It features rendered cob walls and a steep asbestos roof with projecting eaves. There is a brick lateral stack at the rear, along with brick axial and end stacks on the right side.

The farmhouse has a three-room plan on the left, with the original hall at the center. To the right, there is a two-room range that was either added or remodeled in the 17th century, which has a deeper plan at the front. A pantry and dairy outshut were added at the rear in the 18th century.

The exterior is two storeys high and has a 2:2 window range. It includes three early 19th-century three-light casement windows with glazing bars and center-opening lights, while other windows are later casements with horizontal glazing bars only. The doorway is located to the left of the right-hand range within a late 20th-century conservatory.

Inside, the farmhouse has seen little alteration and retains old plaster surfaces in most rooms. Many of the deep chamfered 17th-century crossbeams are plastered over, and in the hall and the room to the left of the hall, the beams are boxed in. The hall features a very large 17th-century fireplace with a wooden shelf on brackets above it. The room to the left of the hall has an uneven fireplace wall arrangement that was used as a washhouse.

There is a muntin and plank screen to the right of the hall, and a small lobby at the back of the hall provides separate access to doorways leading into the pantry and dairy. This area has old planked doors and two original windows that light the outshut. The room to the right of the hall contains a winder stair turret at its rear, which retains its original window. The plan form of the fireplaces in this part of the house suggests a 17th-century date. Later features of interest include a cast-iron grate with hobs in the room to the right of the hall. Although the first floor and roof structure have not been inspected, they are said to be old, possibly original.

Marwoods Farmhouse retains much character and interest, particularly internally, where it has the rare unspoilt atmosphere of a house that has not been altered in recent times.
