Description

Nos 16 and 16A on Briton Street is a house that has been divided into two cottages. It dates from the 17th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The building is constructed of whitewashed stone rubble and features a slate roof, which is gabled at the left end and hipped at the right end. There is an axial stack with a shaft that projects through the roof at the front of the ridge, and a front lateral stack that projects through the eaves. The layout consists of two rooms and a cross passage, with 20th-century additions at the rear. The house has been split into two cottages, using the cross passage as a shared entrance.

The exterior is two storeys high and presents an asymmetrical four-window front. To the right of the centre, there is a 20th-century stable door leading to the passage, which is sheltered by a porch canopy supported on brackets. The windows are 20th-century timber casements, with two and three lights.

Inside, the right-hand room features an open fireplace with stone jambs and a chamfered lintel, along with a rough cross beam. The left-hand room has a blocked fireplace that backs onto the passage, retaining its original chamfered lintel, and a chamfered cross beam with step stops. The roof has not been thoroughly inspected, but some old purlins are still present. The right-hand truss appears to have a conventional collar rafter arrangement, although there are references to jointed crucks in the historical context.
