Description
Callards Cottage is a cottage that likely dates from the 18th century, with a lean-to addition from the 1980s on the left side. It features whitewashed rendered cob on stone rubble footings and an asbestos slate roof, which is gabled at both ends. The right end has a projecting stack with a bread oven.
The layout consists of a single depth plan that is two rooms wide, with an entrance slightly to the left of center leading into a passage. The stairs rise directly opposite the entrance. The kitchen/living room is located at the right end, while a smaller unheated room is to the left. The lean-to bathroom addition from the 1980s is at the left end.
The cottage is two storeys high and has a slightly asymmetrical front with two windows, a central front door, and small-pane timber casement windows that are likely from the 19th century.
Inside, the cottage is unrestored and fairly plain, with only the right end room inspected. This room has a plastered-over crossbeam and an open fireplace, with a kettle crook that was still in use at the time of the survey in 1987.
Callards Cottage is a small, late vernacular building located in the center of the village and has group value with the nearby church and church hall.
