Description
Barton is a house that dates from the 18th century or earlier. It is constructed from rendered stone rubble and cob, topped with a thatched roof that has a plain ridge, hipped at the left end and gabled at the right end. The right end has a stack, while the rear left lateral stack has been largely rebuilt in concrete block. The building has a single depth plan, consisting of two rooms wide, with a central entrance that faces the stair and a rear right dairy covered by a lean-to roof.
The house is two storeys tall and features an asymmetrical four-window front. There is a 20th-century glazed lean-to porch in the center of the front. On the ground floor, there are two 20th-century timber casement windows, while the first floor has four windows; the left-hand window is a 20th-century addition, while the others are earlier two- and three-light timber casements with glazing bars. The interior was not inspected at the time of the survey but is reported not to have exposed carpentry, according to the owner. An inspection of the interior and roof timbers may lead to a revision of the suggested date.
