Description
TWITCHEN SS 72 NE 14/204 Bickingcott Cross - II Cottage. Probably early to mid-C17, probably altered in the C19. Altered and extended in the late C20. Uncoursed stone rubble, painted to front. Rendered cob beneath eaves. Gable-ended asbestos-slate roof. Outhouse with mono-pitch corrugated-asbestos roof. Rendered stone stack with weatherings. C20 rendered addition. Plan: C17 two-room plan facing south, with larger room to right. Integral end stacks, and roughly central entrance (now blocked) to left-hand end of larger room. C19 outhouse adjoining front at right-angles to left. Eaves possibly raised at same time (see cob beneath eaves). Late-C20 one-room plan addition to left. Two storeys with one-storey outhouse. Exterior: Asymmetrical 3-window front; late C20 two-light plastic windows in old openings. Central ground-floor window formerly doorway (see rendered wall beneath). Probable straight joint between first and second windows from left. Entrance now in C20 left-hand addition. Outbuilding in front of door; 2 boarded doors with wooden lintels, right-hand one to house. Interior: Right-hand ground-floor room with pair of moulded cross beams. Open fireplace to right-hand end with chamfered wooden lintel and bread oven with cast- iron door. Chamfered cross beams to left-hand room. Open fireplace to left-hand end. C18 cupboard to right of fireplace with one raised and fielded panel. Three roof trusses, probably C17 (roofspace not inspected).
