Description

Bradford Tracey House is an early 19th-century country villa situated in Witheridge. The house is rendered and whitewashed, with a gabled slate roof. It features fretwork bargeboards with pendants, wood finials to the gablets and gable ends, and rebuilt, rendered stacks. A verandah with a zinc tent-canopy roof runs across the front.

The house has an L-shaped plan and a single build. The front range contains the two principal rooms, each with a gable end stack. A central entrance hall sits between these rooms, with an open-well staircase located at the rear. A long service wing extends at right angles to the rear of the property. The design is in the Gothic style.

The exterior is two storeys high with three windows. It incorporates 2-light casements with leaded lights, French windows to the ground floor, and Gothic glazing. The central entrance features panelled doors. The service wing includes casements with leaded panes and a canted bay with sash windows and close-set glazing bars. The verandah is supported by slender iron posts and has a stone floor with a half-round edge nosing.

Inside, the staircase has a moulded turned newel, stick balusters, and a moulded rail. Other details include doors with reeded architraves and window shutters. The house was part of a small estate established in the early 19th century in a romantic style characteristic of that period. The estate intended solely for recreational use, and was likely a summer residence for a town dweller. The grounds include a lodge on the entrance driveway, a gateway, and a further lodge to the north, which together create an interesting and complete ensemble.
