Description
East Pilliven Farmhouse and outbuilding is a farmhouse dating from the 13th or 14th century, which underwent significant alterations in the 17th century and again around 1980. The building is constructed of rubble with a concrete tile roof on the gable ends and features two stacks with brick shafts. Originally, it was a medieval open hall house, likely with two additional rooms on either side. In the 16th century, a fireplace and chimney were added, along with a floor, and the inner room to the right was extended northward, remaining unheated. The kitchen to the left has a gable end fireplace, also likely added in the 16th century, with a further service room at the extreme left. An inner room with a cross-wing was inserted at right angles, probably in the 17th century, and has always functioned as an outbuilding.
The exterior is two storeys high, but few early features remain, and it is uncertain how many openings are in their original positions. The windows are 20th-century concrete mullioned, and the doors are also from the 20th century. Inside, the smoke-blackened roof over the hall is largely intact, featuring one true cruck truss with massive square section principals and a yoke at the apex, which supports a large square-set ridge piece. The slightly cranked collar is halved and pegged into the principals, with lap-jointed braces. The principals have moulded decoration at the wall-plate level resembling a capital. Massive purlins are trenched to the back of the principals, and most rafters are intact, pegged at the apex and supporting a wattle mat instead of battens for thatch, which is also smoke-blackened. The roof over the lower end was completely replaced in 1978. The hall fireplace features an unchamfered wooden bressumer extending to the outer wall, while other interior features have been renewed or replaced.
