Description
Knowstone Mill is a house that likely dates from the late 17th century but has been extensively remodeled in the 20th century. It is constructed from rendered stone rubble and cob, topped with a thatch roof that is half-hipped at the left end and gabled at the right. The building features two axial stacks, one made of brick and the other of stone rubble.
The layout has been completely altered in the 20th century and now consists of four rooms arranged in a line. There is a direct entry into the second room from the left, with staircases located in the rear left-hand corner and beside the stack leading to the third room from the left. The original plan likely included the two central rooms, with a larger hall or kitchen on the right. The left end room seems to have been added in the late 18th or early 19th century, while the right end room was added in the 20th century. There are large continuous outshuts at the rear.
The exterior of the building is two storeys high with a five-window range. The 20th-century windows are mostly two-light casements, except for a late 18th-century three-light window on the left and a three-light window above a four-light window to the right of the doorway. All windows have rectangular leaded panes, which may have been reused or reset. The entrance features a plank door with a gabled corrugated iron canopy, and there is a lean-to at the left end.
Inside, the space has been significantly altered in the 20th century, but some reused fabric from the 18th and 19th centuries has been incorporated. A large chamfered cross ceiling beam is present in the hall or kitchen. There is a panelled door leading to a cupboard to the right of the fireplace, and a panelled window seat in the smaller room, which also has panelled doors to a wall cupboard. An old three-plank door leads to a chamber at the top of the principal stairs.
