Description
The Masons Arms is an inn that likely dates back to the 16th century, with an extension added to the right end in the 17th century. There may be earlier fabric hidden within the structure. The building is constructed of rendered stone rubble and cob, topped with a thatched roof that is hipped at the short rear wing and includes a small single-storey outbuilding attached to the front right end. There is a rendered stone rubble stack at the rear left-hand angle, an axial brick stack (which was formerly a gable end), and a brick stack at the right end.
The layout features an early core that appears to consist of a larger heated room on the right with a direct entry, and two smaller rooms on the left. The smaller middle room is divided by an axial passage that has a staircase at the rear. The 17th-century extension is a one-room plan at the right end. There is also a short two-storey service wing at the rear left end and a small single-storey outbuilding attached to the front right end.
The exterior has two storeys and a four-window range, primarily featuring 19th-century fenestration, with all upper storey windows being two-light casements and ground floor windows being three-light casements. There are two plank doors and a blocked door at the left end.
A brief inspection of the interior suggests it is largely unspoilt, showcasing good quality chamfered and stopped beams, as well as fireplace lintels in the principal rooms. The roof is noted to warrant a thorough inspection.
