Description
West Bowden Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century, though earlier fabric may be hidden within. It is constructed of rendered stone rubble and cob, topped with a thatch roof, except for a small section of corrugated asbestos at the left end. There are brick stacks made of stone rubble at each gable end and an axial brick stack. The main range features a 3-room-and-cross-passage plan, with the lower end on the right and an axial hall stack backing onto the passage. At the left upper end, there is an additional room, likely a 17th-century extension with a separate entrance, possibly intended for separate occupation. The rear has a continuous single-storey outshut.
The exterior is two storeys high with a five-window range. The windows are all late 19th century or early 20th century, consisting of three-light casements with three panes per light for the main range, except for a two-light casement above and slightly to the left of the cross-passage doorway, which features a six-panelled door and an early 20th-century latticed porch with a corrugated asbestos roof. There are two two-light casements at the left end with two panes per light and a plank door. The interior is not accessible but is believed to be entirely unspoilt from the 20th century. The farmhouse is isolated, lacking a farm drive, and is located in a particularly unspoilt farmstead.
