Description

Wiston Farmhouse, which includes an attached cider house and granary, is a farmhouse likely dating from the early 18th century, while the cider house and granary are probably from the late 18th or early 19th century. The building is constructed of rendered stone rubble and cob, topped with a slate roof featuring gable ends. It has an axial brick stack and an additional stack at the left end.

The layout follows a transitional three-room-and-through-passage plan, with a principal room on each side of the passage: a parlour on the left, heated by the gable end stack, and a hall kitchen on the right, heated by an axial stack positioned away from the passage. There is an unheated service room beyond the hall kitchen at the right end, and a dog-leg staircase is located in the outshut at the rear of the hall kitchen. The cider house and granary are attached at right angles to the left and right of the farmhouse, respectively, creating an overall U-shaped plan.

The exterior is two storeys high with a four-window range featuring early 20th-century fenestration, including two and three-light easements with two and three panes per light. There is a 19th-century plank door leading to the through-passage, and the granary has external steps leading to another plank door. A 18th-century two-light casement window with small rectangular leaded panes is found at the rear.

Inside, the parlour and hall kitchen have unstopped chamfered cross ceiling beams. The interior has largely remained unchanged in the 20th century, with cooking still taking place over an open kitchen fire. There is an old wall bench next to a large kitchen table and an integral wall cupboard with panelled doors. The cider house retains its press and crusher.
