Description

This is a row of six adjoining cottages, including Cluny Cottage and April Cottages, located immediately west of the Masons Arms. The cottages date from the 17th century but may contain earlier fabric that is not visible. They are constructed from painted rendered stone rubble and cob, topped with a half-hipped thatch roof. There are two axial brick stacks, a rendered stack at the right end, and a tall rendered lateral stack with a tapered cap at the rear of Cluny Cottage.

The layout consists of six cottages, with the largest on the left having two rooms, while April Cottage is a single-room plan. Cluny Cottage, located in the center, also has two rooms, with the left-hand room heated by the rear lateral stack. The three cottages on the right end each have a single-room plan. A virtually continuous outshut runs along the rear of the entire range. It is possible that April Cottage and Cluny Cottage were originally part of a single tenement, but the interiors were not accessible for assessment during the survey.

The exterior features two storeys. The cottage on the left end has three half-dormers with tall two-light casements, each with three panes per light. The ground floor includes a three-light casement with two panes per light on either side of a plank door. April Cottage has 20th-century fenestration with a single two-light window on each floor to the left of a 20th-century door. The rear features a likely 18th-century two-light window with rectangular leaded panes on the upper storey. The four cottages to the right are slightly recessed. Cluny Cottage has two two-light casements with rectangular leaded panes, likely from the 18th century, above a 20th-century door, with a similar window to the right and a 20th-century window to the left. The small cottage to the right has a 20th-century window on each floor to the left of a 20th-century plank door, while the two cottages at the right end have a nearly symmetrical arrangement of three windows with two-light casements, each having six panes per light, with a 20th-century door to the left-hand cottage and a 19th-century plank door to the right. The interiors have not been inspected.
