Description
East Kidland Farmhouse is a farmhouse with origins dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century. The inner room end was remodeled and extended in the early 19th century. It is constructed of rendered stone rubble and cob, topped with an asbestos slate roof that is half-hipped at the right end. There is a brick stack at the left gable end and an axial stone rubble stack with a tapered cap and drip.
The building likely originally had a three-room layout with an unusual lobby entry, with the lower end to the right. In the early 19th century, the inner room end was rebuilt and extended to create a symmetrical two-room plan with a central staircase, possibly to allow for independent family living. A continuous outshot extends to the rear.
The exterior is two storeys high and features a six-window range. The left side aims for symmetry with 19th-century fenestration, including three 2-light casements with eight panes per light above 16-paned hornless sashes, flanking a four-panel door. To the right, there is a three-light casement with six panes per light to the left of a small single-light window above a plank door. Another plank door at the right end provides direct access to the lower end, which has a two-light casement above.
Inside, there is a chamfered axial ceiling beam in the hall with hollow step stops. The lower end is still used as a service area with rough cross ceiling beams. The 19th-century joinery in the inner room end remains entirely intact, and the entire range has seen little alteration in the 20th century.
