Description
West Ford is a house built in the late 18th century, reportedly by the Southcomb family, who were rectors of Rose Ash from 1675 to 1948. The building is constructed of stone rubble, which is whitewashed and rendered, and features a slate roof with deep eaves supported by paired brackets, hipped at the ends, and end stacks. The layout is an L shape, with a double-depth south-facing main range and a rear left kitchen wing at right angles. Additional service buildings at the rear create a small courtyard.
The exterior is two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-bay front with a platband at the first-floor level. The central entrance has a step leading up to a late 18th or early 19th-century half-glazed panelled front door adorned with a Greek key frieze, panelled reveals, an overlight with margin glazing, and a simple wooden porch with columns that support a moulded cornice. The outer bays feature late 18th or early 19th-century 16-pane sash windows, while the central first-floor window is a 12-pane sash. On the right side of the building, there are two late 18th or early 19th-century 16-pane sashes, a round-headed first-floor window with margin glazing, and a 20th-century Georgian-style window on the ground floor. The interior has not been inspected, but it is noted that shutters and other interesting features may still be present.
