Description

A row of cottages located on Church Hill, Fremington, likely dating from the 17th century for numbers 3 to 5, with numbers 1 and 2 probably built in the early 19th century. The cottages are constructed of stone rubble and cob with a mix of roofing materials: asbestos slate on numbers 1 and 2, clay tiles on numbers 3 and 4, and corrugated iron on number 5. Brick ridge stacks are positioned between numbers 1 and 2, and between numbers 3 and 4. Number 3 has a rear lateral stack with a clay pot, and number 5 has a gable-end stack with a brick shaft.

The original layout has been altered, but the cottages are primarily two-room deep. Number 3 is an exception, having three rooms and a through-passage. Number 1, at the left end, has 20th-century windows. A plank door is situated to the left, with a blind window on each floor to the right of a 2-light casement window with 8 panes per light on each floor. Number 2 has a largely symmetrical facade with horizontal sliding sash windows on the first floor: 3 panes per light to the left, and 6 panes per light to the right, flanking a blind window above a 4-panelled door. Further windows are a 2-light casement, 6 panes per light to the left, and a 2-light casement, 3 panes per light to the right. Number 3 features a three-window range, all with 2-light casements and 4 panes per light, with a smaller 4-paned window to the left of a plank door. Number 4 has a two-window range of 2-light casements, 4 panes per light to the left and 3 panes per light above a 6-paned light to the right of a 4-panelled door. Number 5 exhibits an irregular window pattern, with two 2-light casements; 2 panes per light to the left, and 4 panes per light above a plank door, alongside 20th-century 15-paned ground floor windows to the right. The interiors have not been inspected.
